Greenwood and Pittsville Heading To State!

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012 -- 6:54 AM

The Greenwood Indians downed Bruce 5-4 while Pittsville beat DeSoto 2-0 to advance to the Spring Baseball State Tournament in Appleton next week.

At the Bruce Sectional, Greenwood started off their day by bombing Pepin/Alma in the Sectional Semi-Final 17-1 in 5 innings. Derek Sterland pitched 3 innings giving up no hits while striking out 6 including the first three batters he faced. Cyrus Nigon had a grand slam in that game, Kole Hinker was 2 for 3 with 2 rbi's and Josh Harlander scored 4 runs.

In the Sectional Final, Wes Wuetrich had a rough first inning on the mound allowing 3 walks and a couple of hits as Bruce took a 3-0 advantage. But, after allowing another run in the second, Wes settled down and did not allow another hit until the 7th inning. Wuetrich ended up striking out 12 and walking 9. Greenwood was able to get 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th and tie the game before a 45 minute rain delay. With the score 4-4 in the bottom of the 7th and Jeff Rachu on second, Cyrus Nigon hit a deep fly ball into the gap in right center that scored Rachu and gave Greenwood the Sectional Championship and a trip to State.

Greenwood is now 25-0 and will take on Johnson Creek (18-6) at 10 am next Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.

At the Brookwood Sectional in Division 4, Pittsville won their Sectional Semi-Final 5-3 over Cashton to advance to the final against DeSoto.
In the Final, Pittsville shut out DeSoto 2-0 to punch their ticket to Appleton and a Division 4 State Semi-Final. The Panthers (18-6) will now take on Coleman (26-1) at 8 am next Wednesday morning.
