Wyoming Cowboy sophomore, Stephen Buchanan of Loyal, became the first Cowboy since Bryce Meredith in 2017 to defeat the top-ranked wrestler in nation, as Buchanan downed Noah Adams of West Virginia 8-7 on Saturday.
Buchanan, ranked 14th at 197 lbs, hit a reversal in the second period to take a brief 3-2 lead, but Adams took control in the third period. Buchanan hit two takedowns in the final 30 seconds to earn the win.
Head Coach Mark Branch said "Obviously the huge upset at 197 was great! That really got the ball rolling for us in the dual"
Wyoming won the match 21-12 over the 20th ranked team in the nation.
Wyoming lost the second dual of the day to No. 8 Arizona State 29 - 15. In that match, Buchanan was pinned by No. 4 ranked Kordell Norfleet .
