Scholar Athletes Honored in Wausau

Of the 800 nominated, only 32 were selected as this year's Wisconsin high school scholar athletes and 3 were from our area.Dan Schoen of Neillsville, along with Taylor Varsho and Elliot Ashbeck of Marshfield and the other finalists were recognized on Sunday at a banquet at Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau.
To determine the top 32 finalists, four boys and four girls are selected from each of four WIAA divisions based on both athletic and academic achievement. Seventeen of this year?s 32 WIAA Scholar Athlete finalists have a grade point average of 4.0 to date, while the average GPA is 3.92. All 32 scholar athlete finalists earned an average of 9 letters per athlete during their first 3-1/2 years of high school.
At the banquet on Sunday, WIAA executive director Dave Anderson says this is one of the best groups of scholar athletes in the 28-year history of the award and each of the winners is proud to be in such elite company.
Each 2012 WIAA Scholar Athlete Finalist received a medallion and certificate and a special plaque for display in their school?s trophy case.
