CLOVERBELT AND MARAWOOD TEAMS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two from the Western Cloverbelt and one from the Marawood Conference took home gold at the 2011 WIAA State Girls Basketball Championships on Saturday. Wausau Newman won their 2nd straight title by beating River Ridge 55-28 in the Division 5 title game. The Cardinals took advantage of 24 River Ridge turnovers by turning them into 38 points. Taylor Thomas led the way with 16 points. In the Division 4 Championship, Eau Claire Regis got 26 points and 17 rebounds from Heather Bowe on their way to a 56-42 win over Algoma. The game was close throughout the first 3 quarters and then Regis outscored Algoma 19-9 in the 4th quarter for the big win. The Altoona Railroaders won their first Girls State Championship with a 54-48 win over Kewaunee in the Division 3 Championship. Kayla Springer led the Lady Rails with 22 points, including 11-14 from the freethrow line, and 7 rebounds. Altoona finished the season 21-7.
