LONGTIME D.C. EVEREST FOOTBALL COACH RETIRES

Thursday, January 13th, 2011 -- 10:23 AM

It began before the high school football season started, with legendary Germantown head coach Phil Datka announcing the 2010 season would be his last after 42 years. Now, D.C. Everest's Wayne Steffenhagen, is retiring after 33 seasons leading the Evergreens according to the Wausau Daily Herald. In those 33 years Steffenhagen racked up 278 victories, five state titles, and 16 conference championships. His 278 wins rank him 6th on the WFCA All-Time wins list right behind Datka?s 280. In 2010 D.C. Everest finished 2-6 for the second straight year, missing the playoffs after qualifying for the postseason every year from 1994 to 2008. Last Thursday, the Appleton Post Crescent reported that Kimberly head coach Steve Jorgensen has resigned, effective immediately. His announcement came as a surprise to the school and the conference. Jorgensen was extremely successful at both Oshkosh North and with the Papermakers. He went 152-58 overall, winning the 2000 Division 1 state title with North and back to back Division 2 state titles in 2007 and 2008 with Kimberly. The Papermakers also took home a silver ball as state runners-up in 2009.
