Saturday, January 16th, 2021 -- 7:04 AM
Braden Trunkel made 1 of 3 freethrows with 1.7 seconds left in overtime to help the Neillsville Warriors top the Columbus Catholic Dons 63-62 on Friday night.
After Neillsville led by as many as 10 early in the first half, the game was a see-saw battle the rest of the way. Neillsville led 34-29 at the half but then Columbus Catholic was able to get a lead in the second half but again, the lead see-sawed back and forth. With 8 seconds left in regulation, Neillsville's Mason Roenz was able to get a tough inside shot to fall to tie the game at 56. Columbus Catholic could not get a shot to go in and to overtime they went.
In the 4 minute overtime it was just as the entire game had gone with neither team pulling away. With the score tied at 62, Trunkel brought the ball down the floor and on a 3 point attempt he was fouled with 1.7 seconds left and he made 1 of 3 for the win.
Columbus Catholic's Eden Jacobson led all scorers with 25 points and Emmitt Konieczny added 15. Neillsville was led by Andrew Brown with 19, Trunkel had 16 and Roenz added 10.
Neillsville improved to 5-1 in the Eastern Cloverbelt and 6-4 overall while the Dons fell to 6-1 in the ECC and 9-4 overall. The same two teams will play again on Monday night in Neillsville.
