NEILLSVILLE 8TH GRADE GIRLS WIN 3RD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 -- 11:04 AM

The Neillsville Warriors girl's 8th grade basketball team earned their 3rd straight Wisconsin State Invitational Championship this past weekend in Stevens Point. 83 of the top teams in the entire state of Wisconsin participated. Neillsville was the smallest of the 34 teams in the Middle Division. They opened pool play on Saturday by beating Notre Dame 34-25, the Luxemburg-Casco 43-24 and then downed Freedom 34-10. By virtue of their top seed in pool play, the Warriors faced McFarland for the right to secure a spot in the final 8. Neillsville won 40-33. Neillsville's first game on Sunday found them facing the Oconto Blue Devils who had revenge on their minds after losing to Neillsville last year in the championship game. The Warriors led 18-11 at half and coasted to a 37-23 win. In the semi-finals Neillsville pulled out a 33-23 win over Onalaska. In the championship game the Warriors defeated Green Bay Notre Dame 34-23 to earn the impressive first place trophy and individual plaques. The Neillsville 8th grade girls finished the season 61-8 including victories over 21 Division 1 schools. Team members included: Molly Attoe, Wendy Barth, Sierra Bethea, Katelyn Crothers, Taylor Gleisner, Candi Hainz, Sami Larrabee, Jenny Lindner, Jillayne Opelt, Faith Schmidt and Bekkah Zickert. The team was coached by Judy Lindner and Missy Stockheimer.
