WIAA TO VOTE ON DISTRICT FOOTBALL PROPOSAL THIS WEDNESDAY

Monday, January 25th, 2010 -- 11:33 AM

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control will vote on a proposal Wednesday that, if passed, would completely change the structure of high school football as we have known it. The proposal ends conference play and puts each team in the state in an eight-team district based on its location and enrollment. The plan calls for an eight-game regular season instead of nine. Every nonconference game is played in Week 1. The top four teams in each district make the playoffs. Teams that don't make the postseason get a ninth game against another non-qualifier. Districts would be adjusted every two years. On Jan. 11, the sports advisory council, which is made up of athletic directors, voted, 11-2, against the plan The state coaches association polled its members and came back with about a 50-50 split on the proposal. One of the main concerns with the proposal is the added travel that will be required for most schools.
