WISCONSIN RAPIDS NOW OFFICIALLY IN THE NORTHWOODS LEAGUE

Thursday, December 17th, 2009 -- 1:22 PM

Wisconsin Rapids is now the new home of a Northwoods League expansion team as the announcement was made official on Wednesday at a press conference in Wisconsin Rapids. The NWL has a rule that teams can be no closer than 35 miles apart, and Wisconsin Rapids passes the test as the city is about 38 miles from Wausau where the Woodchucks call home. A team name will be officially announced in January. Rapids joins Wausau, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Green Bay and Madison as cities in Wisconsin with NWL teams. Wisconsin Rapids will join those other state teams as well as Battle Creek and Waterloo as part of the NWL South Division. Those teams will all play an increased 70 game schedule during the summer of 2010. And South division teams will only play South division teams. With the Rapids team, with 16 teams now, the Northwoods League is now the largest wooden bat league in the entire country. Northwoods League officials and owners alike think the change will bring about even bigger rivalries in the state.
