NEILLSVILLE 8TH GRADE GIRLS PLACE 4TH AT CHIPPEWA FALLS

The Neillsville 8th grade girls basketball team finished 4th this past weekend in the Great Northwest League Championship Tournament in Chippewa Falls. The Invitaional featured the top 32 teams out of the 141 teams that comprise the GNBL. Neillsville lost their first game to Amherst but then beat Bloomer and the Eau Claire Cavaliers to grab the 2nd seed in the white pool and earn a spot in the championship bracket quarterfinals. In the round of 16, Neillsville beat Onalaska in overtime 34-33 to bump them into the 1st-8th place championship bracket. On Sunday morning they beat the #3 seed Mondovi 40-28 to put the Warriors in a semi-final battle with Division 1and number 1 ranked Superior who is the defending 2008 league champion. Neillsville battled from start to finish but free throws by the Spartans in the final two minutes sealed the win for Superior. In the third place game, the injury depleted Warriors again gave a solid effort but fell in overtime as Amherst rolled in a basket with 1 second left. The 8th grade girls team is now 15-3 and they include: Sami Larrabee, Jillayne Opelt, Kaitlin Crothers, Sierra Bethea, Wendy Barth, Jenny Lindner, Candie Hainz, Molly Attoe, Taylor Gleisner, Bekkah Zickert and Faith Schmidt.
