Columbus Catholic Tops Loyal In D4 State Baseball Semi-Final/Other State Baseball Scores

The Columbus Catholic Dons baseball team is heading to their first State baseball championship game after beating Loyal on Tuesday in a Division 4 State Semi-Final, 3-1.

Columbus Catholic got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Ray Becker singled then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Mac Konieczny grounded out to short and Becker advanced to third. Carson Eckes grounded out to second and Becker scored, 1-0 Dons.

In the 3rd inning for Loyal, Jake Lindner walked.  Ryson Ashbeck pinch ran for Lindner. Cain Toufar struck out swinging. Ashbeck stole second. Rhett Lamovec struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch; Ashbeck advanced to third. Colton Sandelier then singled to right field to knock in Ashbeck and tie the score at 1-1.

In the Dons half of the 4th,  Carter Sommer and Tyler Hargraves singled.  Ryan Bernick then lined out to center and Sommer advanced to third. Hargraves stole second. Kayleb Pankratz then singled to center field and Hargraves and Sommer both scored giving Columbus Catholic a 3-1 lead.

Loyal would load the bases in the top of the 5th, but an inning ending 5-2-3 double play ended their threat.

Konieczny struck out nine and allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings to get the win for Columbus Catholic.  Lamovec took the loss for Loyal going 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1.

Columbus Catholic (23-6) will now play Potosi/Cassville, who beat Reedsville 2-1 in 11 innings, in the Division 4 State Championship on Thursday morning at 9 am.  Hear all the action on 92.3 FM WOSQ.

Loyal, who made their first trip to State in baseball, finishes their season with a 16-9 record.
