State Boys Golf Championships Tee Off in Madison Monday

The 100th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, June 8-9 at University Ridge in Madison, Wis. Competition begins for Division 1 at 7 a.m. Monday and at noon for Divisions 2 and 3. Play resumes Tuesday at 7 a.m. for Divisions 2 and 3 and at noon for Division 1. Tee time assignments for Monday's play are posted on the boys golf page of the WIAA website. 

The competition features 16 teams and 24 individual qualifiers in Division 1, and eight teams and 12 individuals in Divisions 2 and 3. Weather permitting, all competitors will play 36 holes, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday. 

LAST YEAR:  Marquette won the Division 1 team championship by shooting a four-player, 36-hole score of 584, and Hudson was the runner-up with a score of 603. Peyton Albers of Waunakee won a playoff to earn individual medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 140, which was 4-over-par at University Ridge. Seymour earned the Division 2 title with a score of 638. Cambridge placed second with a tally of 653. Vince Sigl of Seymour won a playoff to capture medalist honors with a score of 147, which was 3-over-par. Durand-Arkansaw won the Division 3 title by scoring a 651, which was 10 strokes better than runner-up Chetek-Weyerhaeuser. Tucker Johnson of Neillsville won the individual title with a score of 152, which was 8-over-par. 

100TH CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES:  Madison West holds the record for the most team golf titles with 15. Osseo-Fairchild is next in line with nine, followed by Arrowhead and Edgewood with eight, and then Racine Park with seven. Madison West has also produced the most individual champions with nine. Edgerton and Middleton have each produced five medalists. Edgewood (2017-19, 2021-23), excluding the canceled 2020 season, is the only program to win six straight team titles. Arrowhead (2007-2010) and St. Mary’s Springs (2015-18) are the only other programs to have won four straight team titles. Five other schools have won three straight championships. Racine accomplished the feat in 1923-25; Madison West won three straight titles twice, in 1934-36 and 1960-62; Osseo-Fairchild accomplished the feat in 1994-96; and Middleton did it from 1997-99. Bill Heim of Green Bay Preble and Jeremy Lyons of Glenwood City are the only individuals to win medalist honors three times. Heim won from 1986-88 and Lyons from 1997-99. The State Tournament has been conducted at 34 different courses throughout its history. In the meet’s centennial, the 175th team champion will be crowned and the 180th individual champion will be celebrated with co-champions being awarded five times. The only four years since the tourney’s inception it wasn’t played was during the Great Depression, World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic. For 12 seasons (1974-86), there was a membership option to play boys golf in the fall.

TEAMS COMPETING:  The schools qualifying for the State Meet, with the number of appearances as a team in the State Boys Golf Championships in parentheses, in Division 1 are De Pere (10), Edgerton (27), Franklin (7), Hartford (14), Homestead (35),  Hudson (7), Kettle Moraine (13), Kimberly (9), Marquette (17), Middleton (26), Oregon (2), River Falls (17), Slinger (6), Waunakee (4), Westosha Central (7) and Whitefish Bay (38). Teams qualifying in Division 2 are Bloomer (3), Cambridge (13), Edgewood (19), Lake Country Lutheran (3), Rice Lake (10), University School of Milwaukee (11), Winneconne (7) and Xavier (12). Qualifying teams in Division 3 are Alma/Pepin (1), Eleva-Strum (14), Kohler (9), Ladysmith (6), Mishicot (1), Prentice (3), St. Mary’s Springs (10) and Three Lakes/Phelps (1).

DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: The individual qualifiers in Division 1 are senior Jonathan Huenink of Appleton North, senior Jonathan Amtmann and junior Rylan Schulz of Arrowhead, sophomore William Stelling of Baraboo, senior Connor Ness of Bay Port, senior Logan Nowak of Greendale, senior Davis Kock of Lakeland, junior Owen Smith of Madison West, senior Addison Pennekamp of McFarland, junior Kade Wieland of Milton, junior Reece Erickson of Mukwonago, junior Adam Jochims of Muskego,  junior Tegan Lachaussie of New Richmond, senior Owen Weber of Oshkosh North, senior Eric Krentz of Port Washington, senior Marcus Calkins of Sheboygan North, senior Easton Kitowski of Stevens Point, sophomore Danny Dziubla of Verona, senior Lucas Piacsek of Waukesha North, seniors Mason Kufahl and Lincoln Krizizke of Waukesha West, junior Grant Parrett of West De Pere, senior Max Palmtag of Whitnall, and junior Rudy Kehoe of Wisconsin Lutheran.

DIVISION 1 SECTIONAL MEDALISTS:  The sectional champions in Division 1 were senior Vance Reiland of Homestead, who won the Brookfield Central Sectional; senior Matthew Martin of Westosha Central, who won the Franklin Sectional; freshman Grant Lawton of De Pere, who won the Hortonville Sectional; sophomore Owen Purdin of Oregon, who won the Janesville Craig Sectional;  senior Ryan Swanson of River Falls, who won the Marshfield Sectional; senior Luke Weiss of Middleton, who won the Reedsburg Sectional; junior Alex Kuepper of Hartford, who won the Fond du Lac Sectional; and senior Lucas Piacsek of Waukesha North, who won the Waukesha South Sectional.

DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The individual qualifiers in Division 2 are junior Elliot Skinner of Altoona; junior Ethan Wojchik of Amery, sophomore Jared Romano of Clinton; senior Ben Thill of Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern; sophomore Jack Wirth of Kettle Moraine Lutheran; sophomore Jack Pucci of Lakeside Lutheran; senior Max Hawkins of St. Croix Central; senior Tristan Drath, senior Vince Sigl and junior Owen Sigl of Seymour; sophomore Daniel Nelson of St. John’s NW Academies/Chesterton Academy; and sophomore Ignacio Izquierdo of Whitewater.

DIVISION 2 SECTIONAL MEDALISTS:  The sectional champions in Division 2 were junior Elliot Skinner of Altoona, who won the Spooner Sectional; sophomore Daniel Nelson of St. John’s NW Academies/Chesterton Academy, who won the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Sectional; sophomore Fritz Knudtson of Cambridge, who won the New Glarus Sectional; sophomore Derek Watry of Xavier, who won the Seymour Sectional.

DIVISION 3 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The Division 3 individual qualifiers are senior Judson Poad of Barneveld, junior Parker Kujak of Cochrane-Fountain City, junior Reid Votis of Crandon, senior Landon Obermueller of Glenwood City, freshman Luke Holthe of Hillsboro/Royall, junior Tino Santarelli of Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic, senior Evan MacCaux of Kewaunee, freshman Owen Reese of Shiocton, seniors Andrew Buck and Brandon Wagner of Turtle Lake/Clayton and seniors Cole Brown and Kyler Barnett of University Lake School. 

DIVISION 3 SECTIONAL MEDALISTS:  The sectional champions in Division 3 were junior Anders Johansen of Alma/Pepin, who won the Cochrane-Fountain City Sectional; senior Evan MacCaux of Kewaunee, who won the Crandon Sectional; junior Jackson Mannon of Kohler, who won the Kohler Sectional; and senior Eliah Harding of Prentice, who won the Winter Sectional.

TOP RETURNERS:  In Division 1, senior Peyton Albers of Waunakee is the defending champion returning to defend the title he won in 2025. The four-time qualifier also tied for 10th in 2024 and for 44th in 2023.  Senior Vince Sigl of Seymour has the distinction of being the top returning player in Division 2. He won a playoff to earn medalist honors after tying for 16th place in 2024 and 28th in 2023. In Division 3, senior Troy Pudenz of Durand-Arkansaw qualifies as the top returning participant from last year’s tournament, attempting to improve on his runner-up finish.
