WIAA State Boys Golf Championships Preview

The 99th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, June 9-10 at University Ridge in Madison, Wis. Competition will begin for Division 1 at 7 a.m. Monday and at noon for Divisions 2. and 3. Play resumes Tuesday at 7 a.m. for Divisions 2 and 3 and at noon for Division 1. Tee time assignments for Sunday practice and for Monday's play are posted on the boys golf page of the WIAA website.

The competition features 16 teams and 24 individual qualifiers in Division 1, and eight teams and 12 individuals in Divisions 2 and 3. Weather permitting, all competitors will play 36 holes, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday. 

THE FIELD:  In Division 1, the field consists of the top two teams from each of the eight sectionals. In Divisions 2 and 3, the top two teams from each of the four sectionals qualify. The top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team in each sectional, also qualify for the meet. 

LAST YEAR:  Waunakee won the Division 1 team championship by shooting a four-player, 36-hole score of 619, edging Eau Claire Memorial by one stroke. Cody Schmidt of Germantown earned individual medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 145, which was 1-over-par on the Meadow Valley Course at Blackwolf Run. Lakeland earned the Division 2 title with a rain-shortened, 27-hole score of 463. Edgerton placed second at 468. Caleb Kern of Edgerton defeated teammate Cameron Lee in a playoff to earn medalist honors with a score of 111, which was 3-over-par. Cambridge won the Division 3 title by scoring a 27-hole total of 483, and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser was second with a team total of 503. Logan Weissinger of Durand-Arkansaw won the individual title with a score of 113, which was 5-over-par. 

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES:  Madison West holds the record for the most team golf titles with 15. Osseo-Fairchild is next in line with nine, followed by Arrowhead and Edgewood with eight, and then Racine Park with seven. Madison West has also produced the most individual champions with nine. Edgewood (2017-19, 2021-23), excluding the canceled 2020 season, is the only program to win six straight team titles. Arrowhead (2007-2010) and St. Mary’s Springs (2015-18) are the only other programs to have won four straight team titles. Five other schools have won three straight championships. Racine did it in 1923-25; Madison West won three straight titles twice, in 1934-36 and 1960-62; Osseo-Fairchild accomplished the feat in 1994-96; and Middleton did it from 1997-99. Bill Heim of Green Bay Preble and Jeremy Lyons of Glenwood City are the only individuals to win medalist honors three times. Heim won from 1986-88 and Lyons from 1997-99.

TEAMS COMPETING:  The schools qualifying for the State Meet, with the number of appearances as a team in the State Boys Golf Championships in parentheses, in Division 1 are Bay Port (9), De Pere (9), DeForest (10), Edgerton (26), Germantown (3), Homestead (34), Hudson (6), Madison West (47), Marquette (16), Middleton (25), Milton (4), Oak Creek (2), Oconomowoc (27), Sheboygan North (27), Waukesha West (2) and Wausau East (7). Teams qualifying in Division 2 are Big Foot (2), Cambridge (12), Catholic Memorial (15), Lakeland (9), Prescott (2), Seymour (4), University School of Milwaukee (11) and Xavier (11). Qualifying teams in Division 3 are Bonduel (2), Chetek-Weyerhaeuser (2), Cochrane-Fountain City (6), Durand-Arkansaw (9), Marathon (2), Prentice (2), St. Mary’s Springs (9) and Sheboygan Lutheran (6).

DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: The individual qualifiers in Division 1 are junior James Lacey of Brookfield East, junior Drew Bindl of Edgewood, senior Riley Yeskie of Fond du Lac, junior Kaden Kusserow of Fox Valley Lutheran, sophomore Caleb Peterson of Franklin, senior Jack Lamm of Hamilton, senior Owen Kuepper of Hartford, junior Grant Benishek of Kettle Moraine, sophomore Evan Misiak of Menomonee Falls, sophomore Reece Erickson of Mukwonago, sophomore Cartyr Simonson of Neenah, senior Thomas Bobinski of Notre Dame, junior Brady Hayward of Pulaski, junior Preston Powell of Reedsburg, junior Ryan Swanson of River Falls, senior Sam Flaherty of South Milwaukee, junior Ryan Pettingill of Superior, senior Brady Hearden of Waterford, senior AJ Anderson of Waukesha North, junior Peyton Albers of Waunakee, senior Russell Harder of Wausau West, sophomore Nate Schwantes of Wauwatosa East/West, junior Matthew Martin of Westosha Central and junior Austin Dobbe of Winneconne. 

 

DIVISION 1 SECTIONAL MEDALISTS:  The sectional champions in Division 1 were junior Drake Card of Hudson, who won the Wausau West Sectional; sophomore Cooper Eakin of De Pere, who won the Notre Dame Sectional; junior Peyton Albers of Waunakee, who won the Holmen Sectional; senior Riley Yeskie of Fond du Lac, who won the Beaver Dam Sectional; senior JP Flannery of Oconomowoc, who won the Oregon Sectional; senior Matthew Handal of Homestead, who won the Brookfield Central Sectional; junior Owen Wagie of Edgerton, who won the Waterford Sectional; and senior Alex Kim of Marquette, who won the Westosha Central  Sectional.  

 

DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The individual qualifiers in Division 2 are sophomore Elliot Skinner of Altoona, senior Klyne Johnson of Evansville, sophomore Parker Strozewski, junior Liam Aldoff of Hayward, senior Collin Draeger of Kettle Moraine Lutheran, sophomore Jaxson Voit of Kewaskum, junior Shaymus Smith of Little Chute, senior Joshua Parins of Luxemburg-Casco, sophomore Cole Herbst of Platteville, senior Owen Achenbach of Prairie du Chien, junior Braiden Rasmussen of St. Croix Central and senior Tre Wienke of Sturgeon Bay.

 

DIVISION 2 SECTIONAL MEDALISTS:  The sectional champions in Division 2 were junior Davis Kock of Lakeland, who won the Hayward Sectional; junior Vince Sigl of Seymour, who won the Seymour Sectional; senior Tyler Short of Big Foot, who won the Mineral Point Sectional; and sophomore Parker Strozewski of Grafton, who won the Grafton Sectional.

 

DIVISION 3 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The Division 3 individual qualifiers are sophomore Avari Steiner of Argyle/Pecatonica, senior Dominic Ellis of Eleva-Strum, junior Aaron Federwisch of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, senior Finn Salm of Gibraltar, junior Simon Cole of Ladysmith, senior Mason Belongia of Lena, freshman Dane Moore of Mishicot, senior Tucker Johnson of Neillsville, senior Carter Koch of Oconto, sophomore Josh Pouliot of Unity, junior Marshal Smith of Wabeno/Laona and junior Derek Johnson of Williams Bay.

 

DIVISION 3 SECTIONAL MEDALISTS:  The sectional champions in Division 3 were junior Simon Cole of Ladysmith, who won the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Sectional; senior Carter Koch of Oconto, who won the Bonduel Sectional, senior Cameron Lipinski of Cochrane-Fountain City, who won the Williams Bay Sectional; and freshman Dane Moore of Mishicot, who won the Central Wisconsin Christian Sectional.

 

TOP RETURNERS:  In Division 1, senior Lincoln Hottmann of DeForest has the distinction of being the top finisher from last season returning to this year’s championships. He was the runner-up a year ago after placing tied for 25th in 2023 tied for 78th in 2022. Senior Caleb Kern of Edgerton is the top returning player in Division 2. He won the tiebreaker to earn medalist honors last season after tying for 18th in 2023. In Division 3, senior Logan Weissinger of Durand-Arkansaw is the returning champion back attempting to win back-to-back titles.
