Stephen Buchanan is a National Champion

Loyal's Stephen Buchanan is the D.1 197lb NCAA Wrestling Champion.

Buchanan, wrestling for Iowa, defeated Penn State's Josh Barr 5 - 2 in the 2025 Division 1. NCAA Wrestling finals.

The first period passed scoreless. In the second Barr scored his only two points. One by penalty (Buchanan locking hands), and one by escape. Buchanan secured a takedown late in the second period to earn three points. Heading into the third period Buchanan led 3 - 2. In the third Buchanan received a point for an escape and a point for riding time, finishing the match 5 - 2.

Along his route to victory, Stephen Buchanan defeated #31 Remy Cotton, #15 Joesph Novak, #23 Seth Shumate, #3 AJ Ferrari, and finally #4 Josh Barr. 

Buchanan made history along the way, becoming the first division 1 wrestler in history to achieve All-American Honors under three different schools, (Wyoming, Oklahoma and Iowa).
