17 WIAC Wrestlers Headed To NCAA Division III Championships

(WIAC Press Release) Six WIAC wrestlers claimed titles and are among 17 conference individuals that earned a spot in the national meet following competition at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Upper Midwest Regional at UW-Eau Claire this past weekend.

The top-three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes from the regional advance to the NCAA Division III Championship that will held March 11-12 at US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Stevens Point’s Matt Berlin was tabbed the Regional Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 133-pound title with an 11-2 major decision over UW-Eau Claire’s Tyler Fleetwood. It was Berlin’s second regional crown at 133 pounds.
 
UW-La Crosse had a pair of individual champions. Nolan Hertel of Marshfield was victorious at 157 pounds with a 2-0 decision over Darian Estevez of University of Chicago (Ill.), while Seth Brossard claimed the 165-pound title with a 6-4 decision over Chase Schmidt of UW-Eau Claire.
 
UW-Eau Claire’s Jake Drexler of Stratford won the 149-pound title with a 6-1 decision over University of Chicago’s Ryan Fleck. UW-Platteville’s Tyler Hannah claimed the 197-pound championship with a medical forfeit over Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann of Augsburg. UW-Whitewater’s Jaritt Shinhoster emerged with the 184-pound title after a 10-0 major decision over Nick Rogge of Augsburg.
 
UW-Eau Claire’s Tim Fader received the Coach of the Tournament award and his staff shared the Assistant Coaching Staff of the Tournament with Augsburg University. The Blugolds posted a second-place finish for the best team performance in a NCAA regional in program history.
