Tuesday, February 8th, 2022 -- 7:14 AM
The Columbus Catholic Dons downed the Neillsville Warriors in Cloverbelt boys basketball on Monday in an epic double overtime thriller. The Warriors held the lead for much of the game, thanks to their defense and the inside scoring of Mason Roenz, until about 4 minutes left in regulation when the Dons were able to connect on their 3 pointers and tied the game at 44-44 going into the first overtime.
The game was a see-saw battle in the first overtime and the score remained tied, now at 53-53. In the second overtime, the Dons got some key 3 pointers and freethrows to take the lead, but a turnover on an in bound pass with just over 6 seconds gave Neillsville a chance for a win. The Warriors got a pass into the right corner for a 3 pointer from Alex Roman but it popped in and out at the buzzer and Columbus Catholic hung on for the 61-60 win.
The Warriors out-rebounded the Dons 49-31 and outscored them in the paint 36-12, but Columbus Catholic made 12 three's compared to Neillsville's 6 and they were 11 of 12 from the freethrow line compared to Neillsville who was 6 for 11.
