Neillsville Boys Open Season With Win

Wednesday, December 4th, 2019 -- 7:02 AM

The Neillsville boys basketball team used a stifling full court press to dominate early and came away with a season opening 63-42 win over Owen-Withee on Tuesday night.

The Warrior press forced numerous Blackhawk turnovers in the first half and the Warriors cruised to a 35-18 halftime lead. Alex King led the way for Neillsville (1-0) with 13 first half points including three 3-pointers.

Early in the second half, Owen-Withee (1-1, 0-1) cut the Neillsville lead to 13 but could get no closer as Neillsville led by as many as 20 several times. King led all scorers with 23 points, Drew Brown and Issac Weiers each added 9 points. Neillsville struggled from the freethrow line however, converting on just 11 of 27 including only 8 for 20 in the second half.

Owen-Withee was led by P.J. Heggemeier with 15 points and Aaron Ovyn added 12.

The Warriors will host Gilman on Friday night at the Fieldhouse. Fans are reminded to bring a non-perishable food item to the game.
Owen-Withee is at Colby on Friday night.
