WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament Preview

The 94th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, June 3-4, at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. Competition will begin at 7 a.m. on both days.

The competition features 16 teams and 24 individual qualifiers in Division 1, and eight teams and 12 individuals in Divisions 2 and 3. Weather permitting, all competitors will play 36 holes, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday.

LAST YEAR: Marquette was the Division 1 State champion by shooting a four-player, 36-hole score of 598, which was eight strokes better than runner-up and 2017 champion Arrowhead at 606. Piercen Hunt of Arrowhead repeated as individual medalist with a 36-hole score of 142. Edgewood won the Division 2 title for the second straight season, finishing with a four-player, 36-hole score of 605. Edgerton placed a distant second with a score of 644. Lukas Heckmann of Lakeside Lutheran earned medalist honors by shooting a 147. St. Mary’s Springs won the Division 3 title for the fourth consecutive season, scoring a 642, which was 50 shots better than runner-up Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day with 692. Tyler Leach of Spring Valley shot 150 to earn medalist honors.

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES: Madison West holds the record for the most team golf titles with 15. Osseo-Fairchild is next in line with nine, followed by Arrowhead with eight and Racine Park with seven. Madison West has also produced the most individual champions with nine. Arrowhead (2007-2010) and St. Mary’s Springs (2015-18) are the only programs to have won four straight team titles, and there are four other schools that have won three straight championships. Osseo-Fairchild accomplished the feat in 1994-96; Racine did it in 1923-25; Madison West won three straight titles twice, in 1934-36 and 1960-62; and Middleton did it from 1997-99. Bill Heim of Green Bay Preble and Jeremy Lyons of Glenwood City are the only individuals to win medalist honors three times. Heim won from 1986-88 and Lyons from 1997-99.

TEAMS COMPETING: The schools qualifying for the State meet in Division 1 are Arrowhead, Badger, Bay Port, Eau Claire Memorial, Fond du Lac, Franklin, Holmen, Homestead, Hudson, Kaukauna, Kettle Moraine, Marquette, Menomonee Falls, Middleton, Mukwonago, Wauwatosa East/West. Teams qualifying in Division 2 are Edgerton, Edgewood, Kewaskum, Lake Country Lutheran, Lakeland, Marinette, Rice Lake and Winneconne. Qualifying teams in Division 3 are Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day, Coleman, Luck/Frederic, Osseo-Fairchild, Pacelli, Roncalli, Sheboygan Lutheran and Spring Valley.

DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: The individual qualifiers in Division 1 are junior Ben Gilkay of Appleton East, senior Zak Kulka of Beaver Dam, seniors Jack Anderson and Dean Yun of Brookfield Central, senior Cole Griffin of De Pere, senior Cole Hanke of Green Bay Preble, senior Trent Thomas of Green Bay Southwest, senior Sam Mendoza of Greendale, junior Kadin Kleman of Janesville Parker, junior Cameron Huss of Kenosha Tremper, junior Russell Dettmering of Merrill, senior AJ Gray of Milton, senior Kasen Fager of Mount Horeb, sophomore Owen Covey of New Richmond, senior Charlie Aschenbach of Plymouth, sophomore Peter Iwanowski of St. Francis/Cudahy, seniors Austin Thyes and Max Schmidtke of Sheboygan North, junior Austin Erickson of Sparta, senior Evan Thomas of Stevens Point, junior Mickey Keating of Sun Prairie, senior Connor Brown of Union Grove, senior Austin Gaby of Verona and junior Josh Koszarek of Waterford.

DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: The individual qualifiers in Division 2 are senior Vincent Omernik of Amherst, sophomore Pius Haenle of Brookfield Academy, junior Austin Lietha of Columbus, senior Lukas Heckmann of Lakeside Lutheran, junior Stanford Swid of Mosinee, senior Calvin Leverenz of New Holstein, seniors Trevor Priem and Kordell Swanson of Northwestern, senior Cade Rohrbach of Platteville, sophomore Matt Mueller of St. Croix Central, senior Aaron Eimers of Shorewood and sophomore Charlie Schubbe of Xavier.

DIVISION 3 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: The Division 3 individual qualifiers are junior Brice Klabunde of Cameron, senior Isaac Larrabee of Eleva-Strum, senior Jared Lee of Grantsburg, senior Ryan Splittgerber of Howards Grove, freshman Noah Kirsch of Lancaster, sophomore Peyton Schulke of Manawa, junior Simon Mitchell of Mineral Point, senior Matt Hach of New Glarus, sophomore Will Sherman of Oconto, senior Doyle Kelly of St. Mary’s Springs, senior Grace Warrner of Wabeno/Laona, senior Thomas Korsholm of Williams Bay.
