Boys Basketball Champions Crowned

The 104th Annual WIAA Boys Basketball State Tournament wrapped up on Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison..

Trey Zastrow, a junior from Manitowoc Lutheran, won the 2019 boys 3-Point Challenge held Saturday morning. Zastow, representing Division 4, was one of 10 participants in the 3-Point Challenge, which was held for the fifth time.

Division 5 - Top-seeded Sheboygan Lutheran (27-2) won the Division 5 championship with a 77-69 victory over Columbus Catholic. The Dons’ Bryce Fuerlinger set the Division 5 tournament rebounding record with 34 in the two games, and the Crusaders’ Casey Verhagen dished out 11 assists in the game, which ties the record, giving him a tournament-record 20 assists. Ethan Meese was the leading scorer for McDonell Catholic with 22 points. Noah Taylor was the only other player in double figures with 17 points. Columbus Catholic (26-3) finishes runner-up in its third State experience.

Division 4 - Fourth-seeded New Glarus (26-2) won the Division 4 championship with a 67-62 victory over Lourdes Academy. The contest featured 17 lead changes and 12 ties. The Glarner Knights win their first State championship in their fourth appearance in the tournament, and their first since 1932.

Division 3 - Top-seeded Martin Luther (25-3) won the Division 3 title with a 58-49 triumph over Waupun. The Spartans won the program’s first State championship and became the 39th school to win a championship in their first appearance in the tourney.

Division 2 - Top-seeded Nicolet (27-1) earned the Division 2 title with a 67-54 victory over Milwaukee Washington. The Knights won their first State championship in their third tournament appearance, and Milwaukee Washington (22-6) finishes runner-up for the second straight season.

Division 1 - Top-seeded Brookfield Central (23-5) won the Division 1 title with a 69-52 victory over Sun Prairie. The Lancers win their first State championship in their 11th tournament appearance.
