Neillsville Falls To Colby In Overtime

Friday, March 1st, 2019 -- 6:07 AM

The Neillsville girls basketball team saw their season come to end after a hard fought overtime loss to Colby 44-37 in a Division 4 Sectional Semi-Final on Thursday night at D.C. Everest.

The Warriors used a very patient offense and Colby was unable to hit their shots as Neillsville led 19-18 at the half.

It was much of the same in the second half, and thanks to some nifty driving lay-ups by Bella Opelt, the Warriors built an 8 point lead with around 3:30 left in regulation. Then the Hornets turned up the defensive pressure and forced Neillsville to turn it over and Colby turned those into points and tied the score at 34 with just over a minute left. Neillsville then hung onto ball until around 11 seconds left when they took a timeout. After the timeout, a driving layup by Sam Cappadora was blocked out of bounds and Neillsville had one another chance but only .2 seconds on the clock and they couldn't get the shot off in time and it went to overtime.

In the overtime it was all Colby as they outscored Neillsville 10-3 to come away with the win.

Opelt finished with a game high 13 points for Neillsville, 11 of those in the second half, Cappadora added 9. Alyssa Underwood led the Hornets with 10 points, Lexi Underwood added 9.

Neillsville ends their season 21-4, Colby improves to 24-0 and will now take on Crandon on Saturday at Wausau West in the Sectional Final.
