Area Athletes To Compete In Special Olympics State Summer Games

Local athletes; Gregory Schmidt, Kolin Schmitz, Desi Heck, Nykya Smith, and Carter Urban will be competing in Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) State Summer Games which will held at UW-Stevens Point this Thursday thru Saturday.Thousands of coaches, volunteers and fans travel from across the state to cheer on athletes competing in athletics (track & field), swimming, and soccer.
Nykya will be competing in various motorized wheelchair races on Friday morning. Greg is in the mini-jav on Friday along with the 400m run and Desi will compete in the shot put. Kolin will compete in the 200m run and mini-jav while Carter will also compete in the mini-jav on Friday. On Saturday, Desi in the 100m run and Greg, Carter, Desi and Kolin will compete in the 4 x 100 relay.
Rebecca Ribley will be serving as emcee for the Opening Ceremony of the State Summer Games on Thursday night. Before joining WKOW, Ribley co-anchored the evening news at WAOW TV in Wausau. Ribley has coached for the Wausau-Metro Area special Olympics in multiple sports.
