Neillsville Opens Conference Season With Win

The Neillsville boys basketball team opened Eastern Cloverbelt Conference play with a 64-44 win over Owen-Withee on Tuesday night.The Warriors trailed early 3-0 but that would be the last time they trailed in the entire game. Behind balanced first half scoring, Neillsville led at the half 31-14 behind 9 points from Alex King and 6 points from Hunter Hand.
Owen-Withee would come out in the second half pressuring Neillsville and forcing a number turnovers, turning into points. Neillsville would lead by as many as 20 early in the second half, but the Hawks cut it that lead down to 9 with about 8 minutes left. That would be as close as they would get as Owen-Withee cooled off from the field and Neillsville was able to make freethrows down the stretch to make the final 64-44.
Hand led all scorers with 17 points, King had 16 and Noah Henchen added 10 for Neillsville. Derek Hubbard led Owen-Withee with 15 points, Dylan Tomczak had 12 points off the bench.
Neillsville (1-1, 1-0) will be at Gilman on Friday, while Owen-Withee (0-1) will host Colby.
