Neillsville Hockey Players Making Big Impact

Monday, November 27th, 2017 -- 10:23 AM

Neillsville High School hockey players make big impact for Black River Falls/Neillsville Coop in High School Tournament at Tomah.

The Black River Falls (BRF) / Neillsville Tigers Varsity Boys High School Hockey team finished third place over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend at the Tomah Invite Holiday Tournament.

On Friday night, the Tiger boys lost to Sauk Prairie in overtime. Jacob Meek (BRF) scored the Tigers’ only goal of the 2-1 overtime loss. Sauk Prairie eventually went on to win the tournament with a one goal win over Marshfield.

Saturday afternoon the BRF-Neillsville team played the Tomah Timberwolves. In the second period, Jonah Zoschke (Neillsville) scored the second goal of the game with a redirected shot from defenseman James Kuhnle (BRF). Tomah eventually responded with three successive goals, ending the second period with a score of 3-2, Tomah leading. Defenseman, Malachi Berry (Neillsville) tied up the game early in the third period by skating the full sheet of ice and scoring an unassisted goal. A penalty late in the game forced the Tigers to skate shorthanded with only four skaters on the ice compared to Tomah’s five skaters. In sudden death overtime with only four skaters, Zoschke’s hustle paid off as he scored the game winning goal, short-handed, ending in a Tiger’s victory, final score 4-3. Karter Rueth (Neillsville) played solid defense for both games.

The Black River Falls-Neillsville Varsity boys take on La Crosse Logan Central Red Rangers in La Crosse Tuesday night (11/28), then travel to La Crescent, MN Thursday night (11/30), and Menomonie for a Saturday night game (12/2).

Neillsville is the location for the Clark County Coyotes, the local hockey association for youth teams. In recent years, alumni players from the association have placed second in the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association State Hockey Tournament.
