N/G Has Big Scoring Plays In Loss

The Neillsville/Granton football team had some big scoring plays on Friday night but it wasn't enough in a 53-25 loss to Cadott in Cloverbelt Conference action.

The Warriors got the scoring started in the 1st quarter on an 80 yard touchdown run from running back Luke Mayer to give them an 8-0 lead. Cadott came back with a big play of their own with 3:55 to go in the quarter, Mike Emery hooked up with Nicky Nesvacil on a 48 yard scoring play to tie the score at 8-8.

Early the second quarter, Cadott's Noah Kahl scored on a 25 yd run to make it 14-8, but Neillsville/Granton came right back on a Lucas Moseley to Hunter Hand 72 yard scoring strike to give them the lead after the two-point conversion - 16-14. The Hornets came back down the field and Emery scored on a 1 yard run to put Cadott back up 22-16. The Warriors got one more score before the half as Marshall Opelt drilled a 42 yard field goal as time expired and Neillsville/Granton trailed 22-19 going into the locker room.

The second half was all Cadott as they got a touchdown runs from Kolton Dupey and Brady Spaeth in the 3rd quarter and a touchdown runs from Bailey Gillett and Spaeth in the 4th quarter. Cadott also had an interception returned for a touchdown by Kahl. Neillsville/Granton's only score in the second half came late in the 3rd quarter on a 4 yard run by Thomas Selk.

Unofficially, Mayer led the Warriors rushing attack with 101 yards, Selk added 80. Moseley was 5 of 15 for 127 yards and a touchdown and interception. Emery led the Hornets in rushing with 132 yards and he was 11 of 22 for 184 yards through the air.

Neillsville/Granton falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Cloverbelt. Cadott improves to 2-1 overall and in the conference. Neillsville/Granton is at Spencer/Columbus next Friday, Cadott is at Stanley-Boyd.
