Neillsville/Granton Gets By Chequamegon

Saturday, August 26th, 2017 -- 7:57 AM

The Neillsville/Granton football team picked up their first win of the season after beating Chequamegon, 14-12 on Friday night.

The Screaming Eagles got on the board first on a 90 yard touchdown run by Dawson Weik with 9:46 to go in the first quarter to make it a 6-0 game.

Neillsville/Granton would take their first lead of the season early in the second quarter. After a 55 yard pass play from Lucas Moseley to Monte Dietsler put the Warriors at the 1 yard line, Erik Friemoth punched it in for the score. The two-point conversion was good and the Warriors led 8-6.

Late in the first half, Chequamegon would take the lead back on a Newbury to McClay touchdown strike from 21 yards on a 4th down play. The extra point failed and the Screaming Eagles led 12-8 going into halftime.

Neither team scored in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, Moseley hooked up with Zach Smith on a 28 yard scoring play to give the Warriors a 14-12 lead. The Warrior defense would hold Chequamegon on several drives in the quarter to hang on for the win.

Chequamegon did suffer a big loss after their quarterback, Peter Newbury, went down with a serious left leg injury in the 4th quarter.

Unofficially for the Warriors, Luke Mayer carried 14 times for 62 yards while Thomas Selk added 58 yards on 17 carries. Moseley was 4 for 10 for 115 yards and a touchdown. Neillsville/Granton did not turn the ball over.

The Warriors will host Cadott next Friday (9/1) at D.E. Peters Athletic Field.
