WIAA State Football Finals Preview: Division 1

The 41st Annual WIAA Football State Championship Finals continue today at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Here's a preview of the Division 1 game....

LAST YEAR: Kimberly came back from a 21-point deficit to defeat Arrowhead 49-42 in the Division 1 championship game.

Friday, Nov. 18
Div. 1 - Kimberly (13-0) vs. Franklin (12-1) - 4 p.m.

DIVISION 1 NOTES: Three-time defending champion Kimberly returns seeking its fourth straight State championship and to extend its current 55-game winning streak. They have not lost since Level 3 of the 2012 playoffs. The Papermakers are making their seventh State appearance overall. They won back-to-back Division 2 titles in 2007 and 2008 and added their third in 2013. Their championships in Division 1 titles have come the last two seasons. They also have one runner-up finish on the ledger, that coming in Division 2 in 2009. The Papermakers finished atop the Northern Division of the Valley Football Association this year, and they have outscored their playoff opponents 180-43. The Papermakers defeated Stevens Point 28-7 at Level 4 to earn their fourth straight berth in the State final. Franklin will appear in its third championship final. The Sabers other experiences in the title game resulted in a Division 2 championship in 2006 and a runner-up finish in Division 1 in 2013. They won the Southeast Conference championship in 2016 and have won 11 straight games after falling in the first game of the season. Their run through the playoffs has produced a combined score of 177-79 in the four games. The Sabers defeated Badger 35-14 in the semifinal to gain the berth in the championship game.
