WIAA State Football Finals Preview: Division 6

The 41st Annual WIAA Football State Championship Finals will be held this Thursday and Friday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Here's a preview of the Division 6 game.....

LAST YEAR: In Division 6, St. Mary’s Springs repeated as champion with a 39-20 win over Darlington.

Thursday, Nov. 17
Div. 6 - Regis (13-0) vs. Darlington (13-0) - 1 p.m.

DIVISION 6 NOTES: Darlington, the runner-up the last three seasons, returns to the title game for the 12th time. The Redbirds have won four State championships, earning Division 5 titles in 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1995. In addition, they have placed runner-up seven times, once in Division 4 (1997), three times in Division 5 (1993, 1994, 1996) and three times in Division 6 (2013, 2014, 2015). The Redbirds played in eight State finals during an 11-year span from 1987-97. Their return to the finals comes virtue of a 24-20 win over two-time defending champion St. Mary’s Springs at Level 4. They are the champions of the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League this season. The Redbirds have averaged a gaudy 52.3 points per game this season and are surrendering just 6.6 points a game. Their offense averages a remarkable 11 yards per rushing attempt. Regis returns to the State final for the fifth time and for the first time since finishing runner-up in Division 6 in 2012. The Ramblers won the Division 7 championship in 2003 on the heels of a runner-up finish in their first-ever title game endeavor in 2002. They also finished runner-up in Division 6 in 2009. As a former member of WISAA, they won three Division 3 championships, coming in 1992, 1993 and 1999. This season, they finished first in the Cloverbelt Conference standings and advance to the title game following a 22-14 win over Abbotsford in their Level 4 game. The Ramblers scored an average of 42.2 points through the first 11 games this season and 21.5 in their last two playoff victories.

ON THE AIR: The championship finals will be televised live on either Fox Sports Wisconsin or Fox Sports Wisconsin Plus. The Divisions 7, 6, 3, 2 and 1 finals will be aired live on Fox Sports Wisconsin. The Divisions 4 and 5 championships will be aired on Fox Sports Wisconsin Plus.
