Loyal Advances To Level 3 For First Time

Saturday, October 29th, 2016 -- 7:11 AM

The Loyal Greyhounds have advanced to Level 3 of the WIAA Football Playoffs for the first time in their school's history after a hard fought 9-0 win over Owen-Withee in a Level 2 Playoff game on Friday night in Loyal.

The Hounds (10-1) took advantage of an Owen-Withee fumble about midway through the first quarter on the Loyal 10 yard line, scoring on a 32 yard field goal by Nick Rueth.

The game was a defensive battle for most of the game with both teams getting down to their opponents 10 yard line only to be stopped on downs.

In the third quarter, Loyal was able to control time of possession, as Owen-Withee only had possession on offense once. Then early in the 4th quarter Loyal was able to score the game's only touchdown on a 9 yard run by Jordan Radue. The extra point was blocked and the 9-0 score ended as the final score.

Unofficially, Loyal was led on the ground by Stetson Rueth who had 97 yards on 18 carries, Riley Gieger added 71 yards on 7 carries. For Owen-Withee, Kole Karaba had 80 yards on 17 carries and Kevin Kitlica pounded out 78 yards on 22 carries. The Blackhawks also had the only 2 turnovers in the game on a fumble and an interception. Neither team was effective in the passing game.

Loyal will now host the Edgar Wildcats, who beat Wild Rose 50-7, in a Level 3 matchup next Friday night. You can hear all the action live on 92.7 FM WPKG.
