Thursday, May 12th, 2016 -- 8:15 AM

USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin held their 8th annual High School Sports Awards event Wednesday at The Grand theater in Wausau.

Spencer/Columbus Catholic’s Jason Gorst were named the boys coach of the year. Gorst coached the Rockets football team to the best season in the program’s history including an appearance in the Division 5 State Championship game.

The Marshfield News Herald reports that Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s Ryan Dieringer and Owen-Withee’s Will Maki were named the co-recipients of the Story of the Year Award. Both faced battles with cancer that drew support from friends and families, classmates, communities, rival schools and beyond.

A total of 77 senior boys and girls from 39 regional schools were honored along with the top boys and girls coaches and boys and girls teams in Central Wisconsin.

Marathon’s Ryan Gassner and Edgar’s Tianna Borchardt were named the overall male and female athetes of the year, while The D.C. Everest girls soccer team and Stevens Point Area Senior High boys basketball team were selected as the teams of the year after state championship seasons.
