Three Teams Capture State Wrestling Titles

Saturday, March 5th, 2016 -- 7:59 PM

Champions in three divisions in one of the most competitive sessions in State Wrestling finals history.

The Division 3 title was decided by the first tie-breaker after Fennimore and Stratford wrestled to a 26-26 tie before applying the one-point tie-breaker, giving the Golden Eagles a 27-26 win. Fennimore was crowned the champion by virtue of eight victories in the 14 matches.

In Division 1, Kaukauna won its third straight championship with a 29-27 win over Stoughton, which finishes runner-up for the second straight season. Trailing 27-23 with two matches remaining, the Galloping Ghosts' earned decisions at 126 and 132 to clinch the title.

Last year's runner-up Ellsworth won its second title in the past three seasons with a 29-27 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran, which was making its first appearance in the finals. It is the Panthers' seventh championship in program history. The Panthers trailed 24-17, but scored wins in three of the final four bouts to secure the title.
