Neillsville Falls To Marathon; Loyal And Thorp Lose At Sectional

The Neillsville girls basketball team fell behind early and couldn't catch up, falling to Marathon 56-37 in a Division 4 Sectional Semi-Final at Wausau West on Thursday night.Marathon scored the first points on a 3-pointer and never trailed. Marathon's pressure defense forced 9 first half turnovers by Neillsville and the Red Raiders led 30-16 at the break.
Neillsville could not get Marathon's lead under double digits in the second half and the Red Raiders (22-3) advance to the Sectional Final on Saturday against Algoma.
Neillsville (20-5) was led by Mindy Schoengarth and Kayla Lis, each with 9 points, Morgan Hauge added 6. Olivia Meurette and Morgan Rachu each had 17 points to lead Marathon.
In other Sectional Semi-Final action on Thursday night, WI Rapids Assumption downed Loyal 54-50 and Clayton beat Thorp 43-37.
