Opelt Qualifies For Nationals

Junior Phillip Opelt of Neillsville (133 pounds) was one of four Cornell College wrestlers to qualify for Nationals at the Central Region Championships at Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday.The quartet will represent the host Rams at the NCAA Division III Championships March 11-12 in the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.
The sixth-seeded Opelt (18-8 ) earned his second NCAA bid, also qualifying in 2014. He pinned No. 3 seed Steve Rosenburg of Dubuque in the quarterfinals (6:38 ) and scored a late escape for a 5-4 semifinal victory over No. 2 seed Nick Scheffert of Luther.
Opelt fell 6-3 in the championship bout to Wartburg's top-seeded and third-ranked Connor Campo. Opelt had the Knight wrestler tied at 2-2 going into the third period.
