WIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament: Day One Wrap

The first day of the 73rd State Individual Wrestling Tournament identified wrestlers advancing to the semifinals in Division 1 and to the quarterfinals in Divisions 2 and 3.The first day of the 73rd State Individual Wrestling Tournament identified wrestlers advancing to the semifinals in Division 1 and to the quarterfinals in Divisions 2 and 3.
Six of the nine former champions in Division 1 have advanced to the semifinals with a pair of victories Thursday. That list Brock Benitz of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln at 160.
Eight wrestlers in Division 1 remained undefeated through the first day of action. Dylan Koontz and Fritz Schierl of Stevens Point won their matches to both improve to 42-0 at the 113 and 160 classes, respectively.
A.J. Schoenfuss of Stratford was the only former champion to wrestle in the Division 2 or Division 3 preliminaries. He pinned his opponent in 3:44 to advance to the quarterfinals in pursuit of his second straight title.
Action begins this morning at 10 a.m. with the Division 1 consolations. The Division 2 and 3 quarterfinals will begin at 11:15 a.m. with the semifinals in all divisions are slated for 7 p.m.

D2-182 - Round 1 - Hunter Luepke (Spencer/Columbus Cath.) 40-5 won by decision over Rylan Burrows (Adams-Friendship) 38-6 (Dec 5-4)
D2-145 - Round 1 - Ben Klister (Wrightstown) 38-6 won by decision over Sam Burzynski (Stanley-Boyd/Owen-Wit.) 34-8 (Dec 8-4)
D3-152- Round 1 - James Pfeiffer (Cadott) 37-7 won by decision over Colton Clary (Ithaca/Weston) 33-10 (Dec 10-5)
D3-113 - Round 1 - Matthew Grossman (Pittsville) 31-9 won by decision over Isaac Dickenson (Horicon) 30-11 (Dec 10-6)
D3-106 - Macey Kilty, D3-132 - Derek Marten (42-9), D3-138 - Sam Wenzel (41-7) and D3-145 - David Marquardt (36-11) all from Stratford won their first round matches.
