Neillsville Boys Hang On To Beat Nekoosa

Wednesday, December 30th, 2015 -- 7:24 AM

The Neillsville boys basketball team survived some missed shots late to beat Nekoosa on Tuesday night 63-60.

The Papermakers had a chance to take the lead late but missed a lay-up and then had a chance to tie at the buzzer but a 3-point attempt bounced off the rim and Neillsville hung on for the win.

Michael Dux had 15 of his team high 22 points in the first half when the Warriors took a 35-27 lead into the locker room.

For most of the second half however it was Nekoosa's 6'4" post man Andrew Melvin's game. He scored 17 of his game high 27 points in the second half, before fouling out late, as Nekoosa was able to keep it close throughout the half. They outscored Neillsville in the second half 33-28 but the missed shots at the end enabled Neillsville to get the win.

Neillsville shot just 11-21 from the free throw line while Nekoosa was just 11 of 20.

David Harder had 10 points for the Warriors and Tristen Heidemann added 8 off the bench.

Neillsville improves to 5-3 on the season and will host Colby on Tuesday night.
