Youth Baseball & Softball Awards Given Out

The Neillsville Recreation Department held their annual "Awards Picnic" for youth summer baseball & softball on Monday, July 13th at the Neillsville Middle School.

Over 100 boys and girls received certificates for their participation in either Little League Baseball, Junior Slowpitch Softball, or Fastpitch Softball. First place winners in all the leagues also were awarded individual trophies. All coaching staffs also picked a "Most Improved Player" and a "Major Leaguer Award" (based on excellence in attitude and leadership) winner who were presented with specially designed certificates as well.

The Little League honored the Brewers as champions as they earned a sparkling 7-3-2 record. Members of the Brewers squad who were coached by Kevin Erickson and Kevin Schmitz included: Bryce & Logan Erickson, Dylan Voigt, Isaac Berger, Kolin Schmitz, Elliot Hahn, Keeghan Anding, Jeremiah Stephens, Jace Pekol and Sam Hayes. In second place was the Cardinals with a record of 7-4-1. Their coaches were Sue Voigt and Dave McDonald. Placing third were the Cubs who were coached by Regan and Brian Barth and finished with a 5-5-2 record. Placing fourth were the Giants who were skippered by Scott Swita and Mike Gross and finished their campaign with a 2-9-1 record.

The Junior Slowpitch Softball League crowned the Eagles as champions with a 10-2 record. Members of the hard hitting team included: Terren Stockheimer, Bella Opelt, Josie Voigt, MacKenzie Keller, Alexa Ball, Sarah Hahn, Emma Vine, Brooke Magnus & Paris Opelt. Coaching the champs were Missy Stockheimer and Sunni Opelt. Finishing as the runner-up were the Orioles who were lead by Ron Trunkel, Matt Jorgenson & Jim Gurney and finished with a solid 7-5 mark. The Hornets coached by Scott Moseley and Kari Mayer finished third with a 4-7-1 record while the Falcons placed fourth with a 2-9-1 record. Their coaches were; Rick Rochester, Travis Mortenson, Abby Meshnick and Janalee Kapusta.

The winners of the "Most Improved Player" in the various leagues were: Morgan Gurney, Sarah Hahn, Kattie Roidt, Bridget Canfield, Austin Gilles, London Kummer, Carter Urban and Isaac Berger.

Selected as winners of the prestigious "Major Leaguer Award" were Jaden Barth, Josie Voigt, Emily Hanson, Isabella Kapusta, Reese McDonald, Derek Zschernitz, Luke Dux and Bryce Erickson.

The Girls Fastpitch Softball teams were cited for their accomplishments as well. The 10U, 12U, 14U & Varsity groups were all recognized as were their coaches; Robin & Cassie Harder, Courtney Poeschel, Carrie Schmidt, Missy Stockheimer, Sunni Opelt, Josh Johnson, Travis Mortenson & Rick Rochester. They have competed in the Neillsville Booster Club tournament as well as playing league competition in Marshfield and Greenwood.
