#10 Neillsville Upsets #1 Aquinas

Friday, May 29th, 2015 -- 9:43 PM

The Neillsville baseball team got 5 innings of shut out relief pitching from Sam Neville and a 3 run second inning to beat No. 1 ranked La Crosse Aquinas 4-3 in high school baseball on Friday.

Aquinas scored first with 2 runs in the first inning on three base hits.

Neillsville came back in the top of the 2nd with 3 runs on 4 hits including a 2 RBI single by Logan Matson.

Aquinas got a run in the 3rd to tie the score at 3-3.

In the fifth inning, Neal Matson led off with a double to left center. Sam Neville sacrificed him to third and then Nate McDonald grounded out to first. So with two outs, Devon Opelt hit what looked to be an inning ending ground out, but a balk was called before the pitch and Matson scored what turned out to be the winning run.

Neville, who came on in relief of starter Nathan Peterson, gave up just 3 hits in his 5 innings of work and struck out the side in the 7th to seal the win for Neillsville. Sam finished with 6 strikeouts.

Neal Matson had 2 of the 7 hits for the Warriors.

Neillsville is now 21-1 on the season. They will host a Rib Lake on Monday and a Regional semi-final on Wednesday at Henry Lukes Baseball Field.
