Champions Crowned At 100th State Boys Basketball Tournament

Sunday, March 22nd, 2015 -- 9:27 AM

5 champions were crowned, including one for a 4th time in row, at the 100th WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Young Coggs Prep (21-5) won its first State championship in its first-ever appearance with a 56-50 victory over Hillsboro (23-6) in the Division 5 final. Young Coggs made 28-of-45 free throws in the game, which set Division 5 records for most made and attempted in a game. The Eagles also set the tournament record in both categories.

Dominican (24-3) never trailed in its path to making history, leading from tip to the final horn in a convincing 75-49 win over previously undefeated Mineral Point (27-1) in the Division 4 championship game. The Knights become just the second program in WIAA boys basketball history to win four consecutive titles. Randolph accomplished the feat from 2002-05. It's Dominican's sixth championship overall, which ranks second only to Randolph's 10. Mineral Point finishes runner-up for the second time, also placing second in Class C in 1974.

Brown Deer (25-4) made it back-to-back titles with a 74-60 win over Xavier (24-4) in the Division 3 championship game. Xavier finishes runner-up in its second all-time appearance in the tournament.

Mount Horeb (23-5) is the champion in Division 2 following a 58-46 victory over Rice Lake (22-6) in the title game. The final score wasn't indicative of competitive nature of the game. The Warriors were playing without the services of co-Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin Henry Ellenson, who suffered a hand injury in Friday night's semifinal victory.

Stevens Point (27-1) spoiled Germantown's (27-1) run of perfection and history with a 67-51 win over the Warhawks in the Division 1 final Saturday. The Panthers ended the Warhawks three-year reign atop of Division 1 and prevent Germantown from becoming the third program in tournament history to win four straight titles after Dominican became the second earlier in Division 4. The Panthers converted 18 three-pointers in the tournament, which ties a Division 1 record for the two-game format. Stevens Point has now won four State championships. The three previous titles came in 1926, 1954 and 1994.
