Community Boxing Club Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Wednesday, March 18th, 2015 -- 10:23 AM

The Community Boxing Club of Neillsville is celebrating their 5th Anniversary and coach Dale Berger invites interested young boxers to stop by and check it out and don't miss their 5th Annual Boxing Show this Saturday night at the American Legion Post 73 in Neillsville.

Berger started boxing in 1981 at age 10. Dale's last bout was in 1996 or 1997. During his last few years of competing he was also coaching the Spencer Gloves boxing club. He said they then started CBC in 2010 thanks to local interest.

Dale said that their last couple practices have been about 15 -19 boxers in the gym between the ages of 8 & 20.

When asked if he has any advice for those who are curious about boxing but are hesitant or intimidated to try the sport? Dale said, "Stop at the gym and see what we do. Ask the coaches questions. Talk with the other boxers." Community Boxing Club is open Monday and Thursday 6:00 to 9:00 pm. And it doesn't cost anything to train at the gym. Dale said there is a fee thru USA Boxing of $65.00 per year to register, but CBC does not charge a gym fee.

Community Boxing Club has been receiving a lot of media attention following the success of Jake Waltemate and Chayanne Carroll at Junior Nationals and coach Berger said that hopefully they can provide for all skill levels of competition. The gym is open to all who want to compete at the amateur level.

Looking forward, Dale sees Jake and Chayanne making more trips to Nationals. He said TJ Schroeter also advanced to the Nationals in Reno but was unable to make the trip. Koltyn Hensler and a few others will be stepping up to the level in the near future and hopefully advancing to Nationals.

As far as the Boxing Show this Saturday night at the American Legion in Neillsville, Dale said CBC has 5 boxers scheduled to box. They also have clubs from Wisconsin, Illinios, and Minnesota scheduled to compete.
He said you can expect to see great amateur boxing. Doors will open at 6 pm with boxing starting at 7pm. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students and under 5 are free.
