Loyal Girls Comeback Falls Short

The Loyal girls basketball team fought back from 17 points down in the third quarter to take a lead late in their Sectional Semi-final with Assumption, only to fall 56-52 in Waupaca on Thursday night.The Greyhounds fell behind early to the Royals and trailed 14-5 at the end of the first quarter. Gena Grundhoffer, Assumption's leading scorer, had 7 points in that first quarter.
Assumption continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as Autumn Linzmeier scored 8 of the teams 14 in the quarter and Assumption led 28-13 at the half.
In the third quarter Loyal fell behind by as many as 17 before starting a comeback. The Greyhounds made 11 of 12 freethrows in the quarter and got to within 8 at 41-33 heading into the final quarter.
In the 4th quarter, Loyal was able to grab a 1 point lead and tied the game at 52 with :48 seconds left but a couple of Greyhound missed shots and turnovers and Assumption making freethrows at the end were the difference.
Loyal was led by Missy Benz with 13 points, Morgan Reinwand added 12. Assumption's Grundhoffer led all scorers with 22, Linzmeier added 21.
Loyal ends their season 22-4, while Assumption (23-3) moves on to play in the Sectional Final on Saturday afternoon at Oconto Falls against Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran.
