Neillsville Boys Hand Spencer First Conference Loss

Neillsville used an 18-7 fourth quarter advantage to pull away for a 57-43 win over Spencer in Eastern Cloverbelt boys basketball on Thursday night.

The loss ended a 10 game winning streak for Spencer and it was their first loss in the Eastern Cloverbelt.

Neillsville got off to a quick start leading 17-13 after one quarter, led by Michael Dux who had 9 points.

The second quarter did not see anywhere near as much offense as Neillsville outscored Spencer 9-7 to lead 26-20 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Spencer came out on fire as they scored 6 quick points to tie the score at 26. It was a see-saw quarter in which Spencer, led by Bobby Pilz's 7 points, outscored Neillsville 16-13, but the Warriors still led by 3 at 39-36.

In the fourth, it was tight during the first half of the quarter and then Neillsville's Nolan Matson collected some steals, made 3 of 5 from the free throw line and got some big offensive rebounds as the Warriors pulled away to get the 14 point win.

Neillsville had four players in double figures, led by Dux with 15 points, Neal Matson had 11 and Jake Kunze and Sam Neville each with 10. Pilz led Spencer with a game high 16 and Nate Mercier added 11.

Neillsville shot 45.7% from the field compared to 39.5% for Spencer. The Warriors were 10-17 from the line compared to 4 for 9 for the Rockets.

Neillsville also out-rebounded Spencer 33-26.

Spencer is now 12-1 in the Eastern Cloverbelt and 15-2 overall while Neillsville improves to 10-3 in the conference and 12-6 overall.
