OW Girls Take Over Second Place In ECC

Saturday, January 31st, 2015 -- 7:11 AM

The Owen-Withee girls basketball team won a hard fought battle over Neillsville on Friday night 48-44 to take over second place alone in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference.

The Blackhawks led 11-8 after one quarter as the Warriors struggled with their perimeter shooting.

Neillsville was able to find the outside shot in the second quarter behind two 3-pointers from Chelsea Opelt and one from Mindy Schoengarth as the Warriors outscored Owen-Withee 11-4 in the quarter to take a 19-15 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was all Owen-Withee as they outscored Neillsville 16-7, led by Hayley Bunnell with 6 points, to take a 31-26 lead into the 4th quarter.

The fourth quarter was a battle with Owen-Withee leading by as many as 7 but Neillsville was able to battle back and the score was tied several times before Owen-Withee was able to cash in at the free throw line after missed opportunities by the Warriors. Neillsville actually outscored OW in the fourth quarter 18-17, but it wasn't enough as the Blackhawks prevailed 48-44.

Three players scored in double figures for Owen-Withee led by Stephany Heggemeier with 17 points, Bunnell had 15 and Hayley Goessl added 10.

Mindy Schoengarth led the Warriors with 10 points.

Owen-Withee improves to 10-2 in the ECC and 12-4 overall while Neillsville falls to 8-3 in conference and 12-4 overall.
