Gary Andersen Going To Oregon State

Wednesday, December 10th, 2014 -- 6:15 PM

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen is leaving the school after two seasons to take the head coaching job at Oregon State.

ESPN.com is reporting Andersen replaces Mike Riley, who left the Beavers this month after 14 seasons to take the head job at Nebraska.

Oregon State announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said in a press conference Wednesday evening that he was "very surprised" by the news. "I really had no idea this was in the works," he said.

Alvarez said family considerations motivated Andersen's decision.

The report says Alvarez wants to have a new coach in place by January 1. He said he is looking for someone with head coaching experience but the candidate doesn't need to have Wisconsin ties.

Wisconsin plays Auburn in the Outback Bowl on January 1. Alvarez said the seniors have asked him to coach the team in that game, and he will make a decision on that soon.
