Opelt Picks Up Win In Upset of Luther

Sophomore Phillip Opelt of Neillsville picked up a win as #22 Cornell College upset eighth-ranked Luther on Wednesday night 19-14.Opelt, ranked #10 in Divsion III at 133 pounds, registered six second-period points in an 8-6 win over fifth-ranked Evan Obert. Phillip is now 7-3 on the season.
"This is a really good win for our program," Cornell coach Mike Duroe said. "It's nice to see our guys have success against a real solid team, a perennial power in the Iowa Conference. We were not 100 percent in terms of health, but our guys hung in there. We battled and battled. I'm proud of the way they fought."
The Rams totaled 12 nearfall points to Luther's two. Cornell held an 18-17 edge in takedowns.
