The Stanley-Boyd Oriole football team saw their season come to an end at the Division 5 State Semi-Final on Friday night. On a snowy, icy Stiehm Stadium turf, the Orioles were beaten by a very good Amherst Falcon team, 30-14.
Both teams came into the contest unbeaten and the winner would move on to the Division 5 State Championship in Madison next Thursday.
Amherst (13-0) got on the scoreboard first on a 1 yard run by quarterback Garrett Groshek. The extra point failed and it was 6-0 at the end of 1 quarter.
In the second quarter, Amherst took a 14-0 lead on another 1 yard run by Groshek.
Then it was Stanley-Boyd's (11-1) turn to score with about 6:36 left in the half the Orioles scored on a 1 yard pass from Seth Hause to Alex Lisiecki. The extra point failed and it was 14-6. The Orioles would get the ball back and with 1:03 left in the half, Ronny Ponick punched it in from a yard out making the score at halftime 14-14 after the two point conversion was successful.
In the 3rd quarter, Amherst took the opening kick of the half down the field but a 4th down pass was intercepted by the Orioles and it looked like Stanley-Boyd had stopped the Falcons. But a holding penalty was called on the pass play and Amherst maintained possession and converted a 4th and 2 and enventually would score on a 17 yard run by Mitchell Glodowski.
Stanley-Boyd was unable to generate any offense in the second half and Amherst would add one more score in the 4th quarter on a Groshek to Glodowski 4 yard pass making the final 30-14.
Unofficially, Hause threw for 108 yards, but the Orioles ground game finished with just 1 yard rushing, and they netted just 11 total yards in the second half.
For Amherst, Groshek rushed 44 times for 170 yards and he also was 8 of 11 for 102 yards through the air.
Stanley-Boyd's winning streak of 24 was snapped with the loss and Amherst advances to the Division 5 Championship on Thursday at 4pm vs. Lancaster.
