Fall Creek Edges Neillsville In Defensive Battle

Saturday, October 11th, 2014 -- 7:42 AM

In Cloverbelt Conference football on Friday night, Fall Creek edged Neillsville 7-6 in a defensive battle.

It looked like Neillsville would get out to a quick lead after Sam Neville returned the opening kickoff inside the Fall Creek 20 yard line. But the Cricket defense held the Warriors out of the end zone as Neillsville turned it over on downs.

Neither team could score until with 2:00 left in the first half, Fall Creek quarterback Cody Folkers hit receiver Sawyer Rubeck on a 12 yard slant pass for a score making it a 7-0 Fall Creek lead at the half.

In the second half the Warriors were able to get on the scoreboard about midway thru the 3rd quarter. After pass plays of 31 and 19 yards from quarterback Mason Barth to receiver Devon Opelt, the combo hooked up on a nice 33 yard scoring strike to cut the Cricket lead to one. The extra point failed for Neillsville and Fall Creek maintained the lead at 7-6.

Both defenses held the rest of the way and the final ended 7-6.

Unofficially, Derek Krejci lead the Warriors with 108 yards rushing on 21 attempts. Barth was 4 for 13 for 83 yards but he was also sacked 6 times by the Fall Creek defense.

Cody Cline led Fall Creek on the ground with 79 yards and Folkers was 7 of 21 thru the air for 89 yards and a touchdown. He also threw 2 interceptions.

Neillsville falls to 0-7 in the conference and 1-7 overall. Fall Creek is now 3-4 in the Cloverbelt and 3-5 overall.

Neillsville will host Colby this coming Friday.
