Opelt Takes 1st At 36th Cornell Matman Invitational

Cornell College freshman Phillip Opelt of Neillsville had a memorable Matman debut in winning the 133-pound weight class as the No. 3 seed.Opelt rolled to a 5-0 quarterfinal win over Augustana's Sam Butler. He then got past Luther's Brennen Russell in the semifinals, 6-4.
Phil notched an impressive 12-5 victory over 10th-ranked and top-seeded Dustin Weinmann of UW-La Crosse in his championship match. He got to his offense early and opened an eight-point lead after two periods. Opelt improved his season record to 15-7.
The 19th ranked Cornell Rams are back in action Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Border Brawl Duals in Whitewater, Wis. Cornell takes on No. 3 UW-Whitewater at 12:45 p.m., Elmhurst at 2:30 p.m. and No. 9 Olivet at 6 p.m.
