UW Volleyball Hosts Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match

After two weeks on the road, the No. 15 Wisconsin volleyball team returns to the UW Field House to host its annual Breast Cancer Awareness match versus No. 16 Michigan on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.Under first-year head coach Kelly Sheffield, the Badgers continue to climb in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches' poll to their highest ranking since 2008.
"We are happy that we can celebrate breast cancer awareness at a match this month," Sheffield said. "This disease has affected so many women in our sport and our community, and we think it is more important than ever that we recognize and honor those who have fought bravely in the fight against breast cancer.
"We hope that our fans will come out and support us both in the great Big Ten match up with Michigan and also support the cause."
Before the match, the team and coaching staff will honor former Badger volleyball great Margie (Kaminski) Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick was a four-year letterwinner for Wisconsin from 1984-87, and ended her career in the top 10 of nearly every statistical category. She still holds season and career records for service aces. She served as the Badgers' interim head coach in 1991, leading the team to a 23-10 record and a spot in the NCAA tournament. Fitzpatrick also served as an assistant coach in 1990 and again from 1992-93.
Fitzpatrick fought breast cancer twice and passed away from the disease in December of 2004. Each year, Wisconsin Athletics recognizes Fitzpatrick and her family as honorary coaches to celebrate her memory and the many women fighting breast cancer today.
