40th Neillsville Men?s Invitational This Weekend

The Neillsville Country Club?s Member-Guest, Two Man Best Ball Tournament will celebrate its 40th anniversary this weekend.The tournament, which started back in 1974, was designed to have a member of the club bring in a guest as a partner. That format holds true today and the tournament has grown. According to Bruce Vandeberg, who has participated in all 40 years, the tournament started with just 3 flights, a championship and 1st and 2nd. Now the Invitational has 5 flights plus a Championship flight and brings in golfers from all over the state and country.
The team of Dan Schield and Bud Tompkins won the first Invitational back in ?74 and Dan still competes today. In fact, he has been on a winning team 8 times over the years including 3 of the first 4 years and the latest in 2007 with Bret Knutson.
Bill Wachtendonk has been on the most winning teams with 9 including 4 in a row from 1983-86. The team of Dick Umhoefer and Tom Umhoefer won the tournament 4 years in a row from 1987-1990. 3 in a row winners included the teams of Joe Kunze and John Klein (2004-06) and Tom McHale and Ryan Hediger (2008-10).
The team of Jeremie and Mike Johnson were the winners last year.
Practice rounds will be held on Friday with the Invite getting started early Saturday morning. Everyone is welcome to come and watch.
