Mercy Rule Approved For WIAA Basketball

Thursday, June 20th, 2013 -- 1:33 PM

On Thursday the WIAA Board of Control unanimously approved the implementation of a mercy rule for varsity regular season and tournament games.

After the third quarter any time the point differential reaches 40 points, the clock will run continuously unless a timeout is called. If the differential drops below 40 points, the clock will still run continuously.

Other basketball-related measures that will take effect next season include:

1)No Division 1 school will be allowed to host a sectional semifinal or final if their team is playing in that game. This rule was already in place for the lower tournament divisions.

2)All WIAA tournament games will be officiated with three-person crews. Previously two-man crews were used for the first and second rounds and three-person crews used for the regional finals and beyond.

Recommendations that failed included one for the implementation of a 35-second shot clock and the restoration of a shoot-around for the state basketball tournament.
