Greenwood Baseball Wins Division 4 Title

Thursday, June 13th, 2013 -- 11:25 AM

It was a come from behind state championship win for the Greenwood Indians Baseball team over the Lake Country Lightning at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton Thursday. It is the third title in school history and the first since 1990.

Greenwood got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single by Tyler Johnson.

Lake Country Lutheran answered back in the top of the second scoring four runs, all of which were unearned. The first came on a throwing error by Kole Hinker. With bases loaded, a two out single scored two more unearned runs for the Lightning. Then a wild pitch by Westin Wuethrich added one more for the Lightning.

The score remained 4 to 1 only until the bottom of the third when Greenwood took advantage of a lead- off walk by Kole Hinker, another walk by Kole Learman, Johnson pushed the runners ahead with a ground out to 1st base. Booker Bredlau came up and hit a 2 RBI single to left to pull the Indians within a run after 3 innings.

The Indian decided to play some small ball in the sixth. After a lead-off single by Blake Sterland, a sacrifice bunt by Konner Kitzhaber pushed Sterland to second, a passed ball moved him to third, then a bunt down the first base line by Alex Volovsek scored Sterland to tie the game at 4. Volovsek advanced to second on a ground out by Hinker. The bases were loaded after Wuethrich was intentionally walked and Learman was hit by a pitch. Tyler Johnson hit the eventual game winning single to left scoring Volvosek and Wuethrich. Logan Johnson, who replaced Learman, was thrown out at third to end the inning.

James Hlavac came on to pitch the seventh inning and earn the save.

Wuethrich gets the victory for the Indians with 11 strike outs and allowing only 5 walks. The Indians finish the season 16 and 3.

Greenwood will be holding a "Welcome Home" Celebration for the Greenwood Baseball Team this afternoon at the Greenwood High School Gym at 3:30.
